The World Artificial Intelligence Competition for Youth (WAICY 2018) was held on July 28th, 2018 local time, in the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. The two teams, namely the Team TRON (consisting of Junior One students Zhao Yunqi, Zhang Jiantao, Nihao and Feng Yiming) and the Team HIGO (consisting of Senior One students Hu Boxuan and Liu Tengyuan) from Tsinghua University High School, participated in the final competition, and eventually the Team HIGO won the first prize in the Unrestricted Professional Group as well as in the Multimedia Single Item of Preparation and Presentation. The Team TRON won the Prize for Excellence in Junior High Group.

The 2018 World Artificial Intelligence Competition for Youth (WAICY 2018) attracted more than 200 young participants from all over the world, among which 21 teams were from China. WAICY this year was divided into Junior High Group, Senior High Group and Unrestricted Professional Group. Players needed to use the officially provided Cozmo robot, take the theme “Artificial Intelligence Can Change Life”, and give full play to imagination and creativity to show the impact of artificial intelligence on future life. David S. Touretzky, professor of School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, served as the judge of the competition.

In the competition, guided by teacher Tan Hongzheng, the Team HIGO made use of the officially provided Python SDK and successfully cut out the video streaming through Opencv processing with multi-threading, multi-state and modular control, and combined speech recognition. Ultimately, the Team HIGO enabled the Cozmo robot to satisfy all the requirements and exceed its evaluation limits. At the final stage of the presentation, the excellent performance of the Team HIGO was once again praised by the judges, and the professional ability of the students from Tsinghua University High School was highly evaluated. In the end, after fierce competition, the Team HIGO was directly promoted from the Senior High Group to the Unrestricted Professional Group, and won the first place, while also coming first in the Multimedia Single Item of Preparation and Presentation.

The TRON team consists of four junior high students who have only studied one year of science and technology course. Combining with the current Thai football team trapping events, they designed and produced the model, and met the requirements by using graphical programming software. The innovative design and rich storyline won the unanimous praise of the judges, and they finally won the Prize for Excellence in Junior High Group.

With the popularization of artificial intelligence, more and more students are participating in artificial intelligence projects. The achievements made in this international competition is benefited from the investment of Tsinghua University High School in science and technology innovation education. Tsinghua University High School is not only the first to build a Hackerspace for high school students, but also has built six research laboratories based on the cultivation of outstanding inter-disciplinary talents, which fully demonstrates the importance attached by Tsinghua University High School to the cultivation of scientific and technological innovation talents. This competition has showed the technological innovation capacity of Tsinghua University High School students.
