Jinfan Chinese Orchestra

Jinfan Chinese Orchestra of Tsinghua University High School was founded in the year of 2002. With the encouragement and help of the society, leaders and experts at all levels, it has developed into a semi-professional student ethnic orchestra with a completed part system, its unique performance style and nearly 30 pieces of own creative works during the past 15 years. Principal Wang Dianjun and Vice-Principal Bai Xuefeng are respectively the leader and vice-leader of the Orchestra. Mr. Hu Jun serves as the director of the Orchestra Office, resident composer and executive conductor. Meanwhile, some Chinese traditional music experts such as Zhang Dasen, Deng Jiandong, Hua Xiaorong, Yang Qing, and Wang Jin are hired to provide guidance to the Orchestra.

To love the country, the Party, and the people, and spread Chinese traditional music culture to the world has always been the principle of our Orchestra. In the past 15 years, with a great passion for Chinese traditional music, the students and teachers in the Orchestra have been adhering to the school motto of Tsinghua University, which is, "Self-Discipline and Social Commitment". They have been following the spirit of President Xi Jinping's "Speech at the Symposium on Literary and Art Work", taking the responsibility of leading the cultural orientation of the citizens by "spreading Chinese traditional culture", upholding the principle of "sticking to the people-centered creation orientation" as the characteristic of the Orchestra, keeping on painstaking practice and performing actively, serving for the public and spreadin Chinese culture. The Orchestra has taken the role of the seeder of Chinese traditional music knowledge in the school, and it also has become a propaganda team to carry forward Chinese traditional culture and patriotism outside the school. Since its establishment, the Orchestra has travelled nearly 200,000 kilometers across Asia, America, Europe and Oceania. It has given over 110 performances including the visit shows, special performances, and community shows, unfolding China's outstanding traditional music culture before nearly 100,000 audiences' eyes at home and abroad.

During the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, the Orchestra participated many times in performances aimed to welcome the foreign friends in Olympic Youth Camp. On August 23th, the Orchestra successfully organized the "Special Concert for the Olympics" at the China National Theatre for Children, and received the "2008 Beijing Olympic Cultural Festival Series Performance Special Contribution Award" and the title of "Beijing Primary and Secondary School of Art Education Characteristics" from Beijing Municipal Education Commission.

On May 9th, 2009, the Orchestra held a concert jointly with Tsinghua University Orchestra and Tsinghua University Primary School Orchestra at China National Library Concert Hall, named "Zijin Lingyun Chinese Traditional Music Concert", which won praise from all sectors of society.

On February 7th, 2010, Jinfan Chinese Orchestra participated in "The 7th Sino Japanese Youth Exchange Activity" in Japan and won a Gold Award.

On February 9th, 2011, Jinfan Chinese Orchestra was invited to the Golden Hall of Vienna and gave a successful performance, "The Vienna Golden Hall Celebration Concert for the 40th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China and Austria". The performance was awarded by the Austria ambassador and reported by some famous newspapers at home such as Beijing Evening News and Music Weekly.

On October 22th, 2011, Jinfan Chinese Orchestra held a Chinese traditional concert, "The Impression of Huayun", at the National Centre for the Performing Arts and received praise from all sectors of the society. The Music Life founded by Ministry of Culture spoke highly of this performance on two layouts of the paper. Besides, this concert was reported by programs of China Central Television and China Educational Television, such as Evening News and Middle School Students.

On January 23th, 2012, Jinfan Chinese Orchestra was invited by the United Nations to perform "Qingyin Huayun" Chinese Traditional Music Concert at the Palace of Nations. This concert was well-reputed and actively reported by a lot of domestic and overseas media.

In February 2013, Jinfan Chinese Orchestra attended "The 3rd International Art Festival of the United States" and won a Gold Award and the first prize in performing. Its music work, The Fishing Song of East China Sea 1: The Land of the Diaoyu Islands is the Soil of My Ancestors (composed by Hu Jun), won the prize of Best Production of the Art Festival.

In July 2013, Jinfan Chinese Orchestra won a Gold Award in "The First International Chinese Chamber Music Competition" in Hong Kong, the Qingyin Huayun Guqin Club of the Jinfan Chinese Orchestra won a Silver Award and the Ocarina Club of the Jinfan Chinese Orchestra won a Bronze Award. Mr. Hu Jun won the Best Direction Award. During 2005 and 2013, the Orchestra continually won the first prizes in "Beijing Traditional Instrument Competition" for five times. In July 2014, Jinfan Chinese Orchestra went to Taiwan for "Taipei Chinese Music Competition" and won the first prize. The Sketch of Tsinghua University High School, which was composed by Mr. Hu Jun, received the "Excellent Works Award". In February 2015, Jinfan Chinese Orchestra went to the United States to attend "The 8th Hollywood Art Contest". It won the first prize for national traditional music and the prize for Best Technique.

In March 2015, Jinfan Chinese Orchestra attended "Haidian District Instrumental Ensemble Competition" and won the first place. In April of the same year, it attended the "The 20th Beijing Instrumental Ensemble Competition" and won the first prize. On May 19, 2015, Jinfan Chinese Orchestra held a concert "The Sketch of Tsinghua University High School—JING: In Celebration of Its 100th Anniversary of School" at the concert hall of National Centre for the Performing Arts and was well reputed by all sections of the society. On January 28, 2016, Jinfan Chinese Orchestra attended "The 9th American International Art Festival" and won a Gold Award for Performing. Mr. Hu Jun's work, My Southern Tibet,won the Excellent Creative Award.

On July 23, 2016, Jinfan Chinese Orchestra went to the front-line troops of South Sea Fleet and performed a special consolation concert "The Banner of Our Fathers Fly on the South China Sea Forever". This performance was actively reported by many famous domestic media.

In January 2017, Jinfan Chinese Orchestra went to the United Nations Headquarters in New York to give a special concert, "The Banner of Our Fathers Fly in the South China Sea Forever". This performance won a Gold Award in the International Art Festival held by the Lincoln Center. In February, 2017, Jinfan Chinese Orchestra held its special concert, "Ode to the Motherland---- Jinfan Chinese Orchestra of Tsinghua University High School's 10 Years Award-winning Works" at the New Tsinghua College Hall, which was well-received by the society and was actively reported by major domestic media. The click rate of webcast of this performance reached up to 120,000 times.

In recent years, over 60 students graduating from Jinfan Chinese Orchestra have continued their study in Specialized Institutions or served for the orchestras of their own universities. Two of them entered Central Conservatory of Music, two of them entered Chinese Conservatory of Music, one of them entered Tianjin Conservatory of Music, nine of them entered Peking University, nine of them entered Tsinghua University, nine of them entered Renmin University of China, 11 of them entered Zhejiang University, and six of them entered Wuhan University.
